I joined PROjEN in March 07 as an Energy Engineer working within the Energy and Environmental Compliance (EEC) Team providing energy and carbon reduction related advice to both industrial and commercial clients.
On leaving school I studied to gain a diploma in General Engineering and ultimately graduated with a Higher National Diploma in Energy Management in 1989. Following this 3 year course I found there were very few positions available in energy management and many that were available were often only in the Public sector
My first major experience in the energy arena started by working for Gloucestershire County Council where I was responsible for advising and surveying the County’s building stock and operations. This included providing training and support to site operatives, in addition to identifying energy saving recommendations for no and low cost projects. The next role I undertook was as Assistant Energy Manager at Cable & Wireless, for which I was later appointed Energy Manager. My responsibilities included procurement and management of all aspects of the company’s £15M energy bill and its effective utilisation. I later became self employed and began consultancy work for a number of organizations. Much of this was on behalf of the Carbon Trust and involved carrying out site surveys, producing initial opportunities for saving energy and identifying performance indicators for many businesses.
Over recent years Energy Conservation has gradually risen up the executive agenda - whether through rising awareness of global warming, or environmental legislation and corporate social responsibility policies. Unfortunately the deregulation of the utility marketplace and lowering of energy costs has done little to support the reduction in energy consumption of all users. It is only with recent price increases and the awareness of carbon emissions that energy conservation has recently come under the microscope, resulting in a major shortage of experience energy engineers in the marketplace.
There were a number of reasons for joining PROjEN. After a period of consultancy work where advice was given, there was often no implementation of the recommendations. I believed this was mainly due to an inability for clients to mobilise the resources to implement these actions. When presented with an opportunity to undertake energy management work for a company that actually implements projects, I felt I could both further my experience in the true application of recommendations, and also expand my knowledge into operations within the industrial sector.
The EEC Team has been established in the last year to provide both current and future compliance advice and support for PROjEN clients. My role is very new, and the services that we offer are designed to meet the demands that our customers are requesting. In the case of energy, there are recent legislative conditions that need to be met, drivers from cost reduction programmes, and increasing pressure from shareholders and the public to review how energy is used.
PROjEN are very proactive in the energy arena. There are a number of approaches they are taking to promote the services we offer. I have personally been accredited to undertake Carbon Trust work on behalf of PROJEN, but more importantly PROjEN as a company has been accredited by the Carbon Trust to undertake energy management work on UK’s sites that have an energy spend of over £1M.
PROjEN has also become a key player in the adoption of Organic Rankine Cycle engines. These engines utilise waste energy streams that would otherwise be lost to the atmosphere to generate usable electricity. As a distributor of this technology within the industrial sector, PROjEN are able to provide turnkey solutions to many operators.
On a more personal level, working with PROjEN allows me the opportunity to offer my experience in the energy field whilst expanding my own knowledge of both implementation and new technologies. I am able to work in a very friendly environment with a diverse section of engineers and I feel a valued team member of any project I am involved with. I have also been recognised for the work that I have undertaken to date, and certainly feel part of the team even though I am partly home based.
In summary, PROjEN are an excellent company to work within, with their support for numerous charities, and for providing social events that allows the whole company to meet and mix, thereby encouraging good working relationships, which results in an excellent working culture.
