Employee Profile - John Poppitt

I started my career in engineering with a small company based in Wilmslow Cheshire called Chemical and Thermal Engineering. CTE was of about a similar size to PROjEN today, it was good place to work and I feel it gave me a good start in the North West engineering community. However, at that time in my career I could not wait to get out and experience the world of contracting. Working at various companies over the past 20 plus years, has given me much valuable experience but I feel my training and career advancement has suffered.

Notable projects I have been involved in include a large storage and mixing facility for Industrial Latex Compounds Ltd. This project included both powder handling and piping elements, a Fluorine generation plant for BNFL Springfield and other work including various projects for AstraZeneca, such as layout of a multipurpose bulk drug facility and the redesign of a pures facility including installation of full containment discharge units. Both these facilities contained Matcon discharge units and Powder Systems Ltd containment gloveboxes. One of these facilities also had a filtered recirculation clean in place system. One of my last jobs there was acting as lead piping designer/engineer for a new hydrogenation facility.

I joined PROjEN in March of 2005 expecting much of the same type of work and career advancement opportunities. I was surprised to find how quickly opportunities for advancement and training soon appeared.

Training courses I have completed include both the AutoPlant specification generator and administrator courses. I am also a member of the internal auditors team and have taken the internal auditor course and will be taking the lead auditor course in the next couple of months. My career has also moved on with a promotion to mechanical engineer.

On the whole life at PROjEN has been very good for me. So far the work is challenging and I have also had opportunities to be involved in the company’s future growth in IT with the upcoming Dynamics AX and Share Point implementation

On a lighter side the company has run a couple of social events which I have attended, a sportsman’s evening and a visit to the comedy club in Manchester. Both events I thoroughly enjoyed and gave opportunities to socialise with my colleagues outside of work.
